Forget about the poisonous cottonmouths in the local streams.
It’s this DH’s Twistiness and Engineering that pose a biblical
challenge for any aspiring snake handler. After quietly lurking
along Moccasin Creek, this road’s smooth-scaled Pavement
suddenly strikes up along the dry cliff of a remote and
dangerous canyon. Should you survive, it backs off just as
quickly, stalking you with straights and barely-curves all the
way through the sleepy crossroads of Coulterville. But just past
town, this viper, threatened by unspoiled mountains and steep
gorges, strikes again, this time releasing its full venom. A
guardrail-less road edge hisses at your tires as the road
writhes along the glorious rock and shrub-studded cliffs of the
steep, remote Merced River gorge. Mishandling the coils up to
the celestial viewpoint just north of Bear Valley could mean
certain death. But like Mark says, “They shall take up serpents;
and it shall not hurt them.” Just pray he meant you.
