At a Glance
Handsome, colorful Major James D. Savage is best remembered for how he died, but he’s also famous for three major discoveries: rich deposits of placer gold at Big Oak Flat; the magnificent Yosemite Valley during the Mariposa Indian Wars; and how to satisfy his 33 Native American wives. A tough act to follow, sure, but ride this hunky, Character-filled DH and you’ll stumble on a few discoveries of your own. Like the pure vein of 24-carat curves on Priest Grade. Or the richly paved riding gold past Groveland that climbs steadily in stretched-out twisties through escalating Remoteness on the approach to the Sierra Nevada. Not to mention the increasingly rugged, foothill Scenery that climaxes when you slip into the Merced Gorge and revel in Yosemite’s stunning native attractions. Just don’t run afoul of the authorities like our boy Jim did. This is a heavily traveled tourist route with a CHP speed tax presence eager to put a bullet in your wallet. Could be worse, though; Jimbo ended up being shot to death by his judge.
