“We don't need no stinkin' badges” was the motto of the Mexican 49ers who founded Hornitos. The new town quickly developed a well-earned rep as the roughest, outside-the-law gold camp in Mariposa County. Today however, with the possible exception of the bar offering “Drinks to Go”, this quiet, little village is as peaceful and quiet as the mellow, law-abidin' DH that runs past it. The road, which cuts through an easy-mannered landscape of foothills, open plains and scattered oak trees does have some Twistiness, though the Pavement occasionally rocks your boat. It’s proximity to the Central Valley and the buildings you see near Catheys Valley do compromise Remoteness. Nevertheless, at the end of the day, it's only the Engineering that really gets out of line on this DH – at one point, it actually moves the road more up and down than side to side. Not enough, mind you, to prevent some from being tempted to rebel against the local speed tax laws. Good thing the Speed Tax Collectors are more likely to be keeping a lid on the numbered highway traffic nearby rather than hereabouts. Because after all, you don't need no stinkin' badges either.

'I was on the Hornitos Rd portion of the DH this morning. It really is one of the best roads in CA! They have just repaved it.' --John
