Perennially snowcapped Mt Shasta dominates
the landscape hereabouts. Unfortunately, the main effect of the
volcano’s effluvial efforts has been to smother this road’s
surrounding terrain in a thick, pacifying layer of lava. But it
has extruded some pretty fiery TIRES numbers as well. While not
exactly the twistiest DH in the state, the curves that do exist
are more than adequately served by the quality of the Pavement
and Engineering. Remoteness is excellent too; the only man-made
things you're likely to see are hell-bent-for-your-leather
logging trucks. And although the Scenery consists largely of
evergreen trees of various species and sizes, there are some
views of the breathtaking volcano toward the ride’s north end in
the wide-open, curveless Red Rock Valley. There’s no question
that until Shasta rumbles back into action and changes the
landscape, this hasta be the best riding in the area.
