You’d think with these kinds of TIRES numbers, you’d find a lot of sportbikes converging on this twisty, question-mark-shaped route through California’s least visited national park. But while cruisers love this smoothly paved ride through the snowy, volcanic peaks, rugged, red-rock slopes, alpine forests and floral meadows, something keeps their knee puck-dragging brothers away. It’s sure not the lack of Twistiness or Scenery. The Forest Service Pavement is good to great and Engineering is more than adequate. You might think it had something to do with the 35-mph (55-kmh) zone that covers the twistier southern half. Or the tourist traffic that can descend like a blanket of ash on summer weekends. But the real reason? The same guys who will spend two grand on a set of Akrapovic racing pipes and four hundred bucks on the latest radar detector can’t bring themselves to part with a measly $5 toll, no matter how great a road is.

'It's $6 now. Fun road, but going through major re-paving. We went through a couple inches of sand / gravel for a while, had rocky patches and really new asphalt. The road has no shoulder at the moment in a lot of places. The most beautiful views. Worth it.' --Lisa OReilly

'Spend the $5. This is a great road with awesome scenery. The $5 gets you a pass for a week. Do what we did and ride it 3 times in 2 days. The summit is 8500 feet, so bring a jacket. It gets cool up there even in summer. ' --Ron Leonard

'Rode this 6 years ago (sportbike! 5 bucks? Bah! And THAT was when the CDN loonie was worth 55 US cents!). Worth doing for sure. Being a Park, traffic can be an issue, but console yourself with the scenary if need be.' --Angus Noble
