At a Glance Let the Eagle soar
Like she's never soared before
From rocky coast to golden shore
Let the mighty Eagle soar
Former Attorney General John Ashcroft will forever be remembered
for his stirring paean to NorCal’s DH60. This quiet flight
through the varied, if unspectacular dry-country Scenery that
surrounds the state’s second largest natural lake won’t be hurt
by a little eulogizing though. That’s because it’s located in
one of the least populated counties in California. The initial
hop through loose, pine forest north of Susanville prefaces a
soaring climb up the flanks of Roop Mtn. On the subsequent
descent, the road hunts through the Brockman Flat lava beds on
the golden, western shore of the lake before thermalling up,
down and back up the gentler topography that faces the lake’s
rockier eastern coast. The first third has concentrated
Twistiness, while the remainder sweeps more gently and is more
suitable to flying at higher speeds. The older variety of
Pavement causes few problems, though you probably wouldn't mind
if it was a little wider on that first piece. And there's so
little roadside development that even a large convocation of
riders won’t impair its remote feeling. Yes, the Eagle soars all
right but – no offense, John – we still prefer the sound of pipe
music.
