At a Glance
Lake Tahoe, the “Jewel of the Sierra” as Mark Twain called it, is a brilliant, corn-flower blue sapphire set between the Sierra Nevada’s Desolation Wilderness and the Carson Range. At 6,229 ft (1912 m), it’s the highest lake of its size in the US, the third deepest lake in North America and the tenth deepest lake in the entire world. This short but scintillating necklace of tight curves running up the often busy, southwest shoreline of Tahoe also rates a high evaluation, especially for its Twistiness and Pavement facets. The Scenery is particularly lustrous around the glittering pendant of Emerald Bay but it does have a few development blemishes at the northern end. Flaws in Remoteness, in the intensity and distribution of traffic and length all take away from its Caratcter. This minor gem may not be perfect but if you appraise it in less-busy times of the year, you’ll be glad you added it to your collection of precious rides.
