Erudite riders know that the mythical Road to El Dorado refers to Voltaire’s novel, Candide. For everyone else, it’s the title of a mediocre Disney film. But for all motorcyclists, the phrase is an evocative reminder that it’s in the journey that the true riches lay. This surprisingly lightly trafficked stretch of the otherwise busy Hwy 49 isn’t long, but it is memorable. Elysian Pavement and idyllic Engineering make for a whimsical and easy cornering ride through the quiet fields and cloistered groves north of Plymouth. There’s a hint of suspense in the couple of tight turns into and out of a gorge in the middle but nothing you can’t handle. Despite suffering great hardship on their travels, Candide’s ever-optimistic companion, Dr. Pangloss, always insisted that life couldn’t be better. Riding this road to El Dorado in the cooler, later part of the day and watching the sun set behind the curtain of oaks, you’ll agree that Pangloss was right: even though we share it with speed tax collectors, this is indeed the “best of all possible worlds.”
