“Better to have climbed and fallen than not
to have climbed at all” remarked wrestling face Bret Harte when
he and country-pop star Shania Twain scrapped their matrimonial
plans. “It is easier to stay out than get out,” replied the diva
ruefully. But at least the motorcyclists among their
disappointed legion of fans can find true love in the happy
marriage of TIRES components that make up this fine story. Like
its namesakes, DH8 has its share of fame. And no wonder.
Silkily-toned, shut-in-winter Pavement and an impressive body
slam of Twistiness combine with always-popular Remoteness on an
entertaining climb up and down either side of Sonora Pass in the
heart of the Sierra Nevada. And this crowd pleaser is suitable
for cruiser audiences too. Because it bisects the Carson Iceberg
and Emigrant Wildernesses, it has the kind of high-country
Scenery that draws a packed house. Sure, as in many
relationships, the initial excitement can ebb after a time.
Especially once you get into the western foothill country west
of Strawberry. There, the entertainment value is much mellower
and the concert of traffic can leave you feeling like you're
locked in a brutal cage match. Still, most riding aficionados
would agree that it’s better to stay out and climb this road
rather than get out and never ride it at all. As long as you
leave out the “falling” part, that is.
