Listen and understand. The Speed Tax Collector is out there. It can’t be bargained with. It can’t be reasoned with. It doesn’t feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead broke.

Well, at least that’s how Kyle Reese would have described the Terminator if he were a motorcyclist. Fortunately, whether you see STCs as terminators, predators or just bungling kindergarten cops, this piece of road offers some measure of sanctuary, despite being a state highway. That’s because there’s far better pillage before the DH begins amid the barbaric traffic west of Arnold. The route starts out easy as you pump your iron horse through tight but basic reps of S-curves in the thick forest of Calveras Big Trees State Park. But past Dorrington, it takes all your muscle to ride strong and fast through the long, linked, perfectly paved and sculpted sweepers that make this DH a contender for Mr. Pavement and Engineering Universe. Scenery accents are increasingly alpine and European as you climb. In fact, by the time you reach the road’s more remote higher points, the sparsely treed, granite mountains and ridges look like something naturalized from Austria. All you need are clothes, boots and a motorcycle. Hasta la vista, baby.

'The stretch to Lake Alpine is my favorite run in NorCal. The sweeping turns leading into high speed straights are "tow my bike away" invigorating! Last ride, in March (snow on the roadsides) ended with us blowing past a parked CHP taking a lunch break. He slowly pulled out, no lights and met us a the CLOSED gate past Bear Valley. No ticket, just asked to you know what.' --Ray M
