Okay, okay, don’t get your knickers in a
knot. Sure you might be saying, “Whoa, what’s with this
Pavement?” about a quarter mile into this DH. Followed by “Is
this piece of crap worth traveling to, to journey on?” Granted,
the first 2.0 mi (3.2 km) is a little on the bumpy, patchy,
narrow, unpainted and horribly engineered side. But that’s only
to deter curious RVs. After you endure that initial section
through the canyon, the asphalt stripes up, widens and smoothes
to more or less average grade over miles of well-sightlined and
evenly cambered sweepers. And the only traffic you’ll probably
have to contend with is the weekend boaters heading to and from
the lake. Sugar pines, ponderosas and white firs constitute the
Scenery on most of the route, though there are some detailed
rockfaces and high views as you cross and climb off the Clavey
River. Once you reach the lake, you either have to backtrack or
take the substandard 23.2 mi (27.1 km) run down Cherry Lake Rd (FSR
17) to mid-DH14 Moccasin – Yosemite Jct. Should you opt for FSR
17, a sheet bend or series of half-hitches should do the trick.
